Sustainability in the Logistics Industry

The increasing need for resources and energy of today's world, consumption habits that increase at the same rate, unplanned population growth and the decrease in energy resources developing accordingly, climate change and environmental pollution bring out the concept of “sustainability”. As we all know, we are faced with the problem of a "sustainable future" as the rapid consumption of humanity and the damage to nature have increased exponentially at this rate. The world population, which was 3.6 billion in the 1970s, has reached 8 billion today. It does not seem possible to meet the needs of the human population, which has doubled in a period of fifty years, from the resources that already exist in the world. Let's consider the industry as a center, and all the production, transportation and commercial activities that occur as a periphery. In this context, the current environmental problems caused by the center and its periphery result from the accumulation of cumulative effects that exceed the limits of the ecological balance. This cumulative effect can make future industrial development impossible unless economically and ecologically sustainable ways are sought.
If we examine the situation in question from another perspective: In the current global economic order, 1.7 planets are needed to renew the use of resources and absorb the amount of carbon dioxide (Global Footprint Network).
The Graphic shows the number of planets needed for human activities.

The Kyoto Protocol, which is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed in 1997, entered into force in 2005, and it aimed to pave the way for change and sustainability on a global scale. Although the point and numerical values are not very bright, the decisions taken with the protocol have made it necessary to make more ecological breakthroughs in all kinds of industrial activities other than traditional methods.
In summary, within the framework of the international decisions taken, environmental products and activities have also been reflected in the already operating businesses.
In this sense, innovation increases the productivity and profitability of enterprises, offers the opportunity to enter new markets and can enable the growth of the existing market. Investing in sustainable, environmentally friendly practices brings along a cost problem for businesses, but operating with the "traditional method" at the current level has become equivalent to disappearing in a short-term and vicious cycle. Decisions taken at both national and international levels pave the way for the ecological and sustainable activity of businesses.
